AKB48

AKB48 is a girls “idol” group that sings songs by hit-making music producer Yasushi Akimoto. The group formed in 2005, and the group has its own theater in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, an area known for Tokyo’s most cutting edge electronics and technology shops. Members of AKB48 perform almost everyday in this area.

AKB48 has attracted attention from abroad as being icons of Japanese pop culture, and the group has appeared in events such as the JAPAN EXPO in Paris, and in the collaboration event between artist Takashi  Murakami and Louis Vuitton. The group has also had success in independent performances overseas such as in New York and Beijing. From the beginning of 2010’s fiscal year (April), the group will be making appearances in commercials for the Environmental Ministry.
